Algae Rhythms is the inaugural music and arts festival hosted by Project Surge; a research project that aims to challenge unsustainable practices in the music events industry, and explore emerging sustainable solutions through the intersection of marine science, art and design.
History has shown that music and art can be catalysts for cultural and societal change. Never before have we needed change as much as we need it now. Tasmanian waters are warming at four times the world average. We have lost 95% of our giant kelp forests in the past 15 years.
What happens when we meld artistic vision, creative thinking and cutting edge research? Let’s stop thinking about science and art as chalk and cheese. Together, they can change the future of our planet.
Join us; dance, be inspired, see underwater worlds in a way that you’ve never seen them before. Algae Rhythms is Tassie’s freshest underwater boogie.

Giant kelp forests are native to the waters of lutruwita/Tasmania’s east coast, the home of Algae Rhythms. These kelp forests have declined by 95% in the last 15 years. But simultaneously, there is hope; seaweed and algae-based products are the future of sustainable solutions, from bio-plastics, to materials and agriculture.
Seaweed is the ultimate juxtaposition; both under threat from human impact, and the factor that can help us begin to reverse the damage we have done.
Algae Rhythms aims to engage the seaweed industry of lutruwita/Tasmania as a vehicle for sustainability and change within the local music & arts industry, and the wider community.

Algae Rhythms is partnering with a range of organisations for on-site education opportunities, as well as post-festival conservation projects. These include, but are not limited to;

Through Project Surge, we have developed a research model which provides guiding principles, charters and policies, and phases for implementation of sustainable practices in the Tasmanian events industry. The model also provides an extensive list of design propositions, through which we envisage design playing a critical role in the future of sustainable and innovative solutions for the events industry.
Algae Rhythms is the application of the Project Surge model.
